The Condo Move Checklist: Elevator Bookings, Parking, and Timing

October 7, 2026 · Square One Movers

A condo move is a different animal than a house move. The truck, the crew, and the boxes are the same, but the building has its own rules, and those rules decide how smoothly the day goes. Here is what to sort out before moving day.

1. Book the elevator first

Most high-rises require you to reserve the service or freight elevator, often with a minimum notice period. Call or email building management as soon as you have a date. Ask:

  • Is there a booking window (for example, certain hours only)?
  • Is a refundable deposit or a move-in fee required?
  • Do you need to pad the elevator, or does the building do it?

If you are moving out and into different buildings, you will need to do this twice, so line up both bookings before you confirm a time with your movers.

2. Sort out truck parking and the loading dock

Ask where a large truck is allowed to stop. Some buildings have a loading dock with height limits; others use a designated curb spot. Tell your movers the truck size ahead of time so they can confirm it fits.

3. Choose your time window with the elevator in mind

Morning slots tend to be easier because elevators are less busy and you have daylight to finish. Weekdays are often simpler than weekends, when more residents are moving. If you have flexibility, it is worth asking management which days are quietest.

4. Prep your unit

  • Disassemble what you can, or let your crew know what needs it.
  • Pack boxes small enough to lift comfortably.
  • Keep a short path clear from the door to the elevator.
  • Set aside valuables, documents, and daily essentials to carry yourself.

5. Confirm the details with your movers

Share the elevator booking time, the loading area, the floor numbers, and any building rules. The more your crew knows in advance, the fewer surprises on the day.

Tip: take a photo of the elevator booking confirmation and keep it on your phone. Security desks sometimes ask for it.
